Ambit 35 Reimagining by Juliana Futter

Juliana Futter reimagines Ambit 35

Part of our summer 2020 REIMAGINING Series, when different artists re-worked classic AMBITs.

In May 2020, Ambit Illustration Editor, Mireille Fauchon commissioned Juliana Futter to illustrate Ambit 35 (1968). Futter produced these three drawings.

“This triptych was based on the winner of Ambit 35’s Drugs and Creative Writing competition from 1968, ‘Trip Tick’. The short story follows a psychedelics fuelled descriptive word flow about their ex-wives, which I then shaped into a visual narrative over the three images. ‘Trip Tick’ is extremely detailed (including one full page of their sexual preferences listed) and I used visual cues to insinuate the drug use, time period and location in small features within the illustration. I looked to OZ magazine who used illustrators such as Martin Sharp and Robert Crumb to inform the detailed heavy visual language and the tone for the late 60s.”

Juliana Futter is an illustrator and animator currently based in London. She graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Visual Communication in 2017. Juliana works both freelance individually and is also a part of creative duo, My Wife and I.
