Part of our summer 2020 REIMAGINING Series, when different artists re-worked classic AMBITs.
In May 2020, Ambit Illustration Editor Mireille Fauchon commissioned Gareth Proskourine-Barnett to illustrate Ambit 87 (1981). Proskourine-Barnett produced this video:
“Spectres strode through his unlit dreams… the fugues… accelerating… a series of little tableaux, psychosexual shrines to the strange gods inside his head… spatial change perceived independently of time… growing nostalgia for the future, a memory of the future I have experienced but somehow forgotten.”
Gareth Proskourine-Barnett is a researcher, designer and educator based in Birmingham. His practice employs research and design fictions to think about our relationship to space, new modes of materiality and xeno-architecture. Since graduating with an MA in Communication Design from Central Saint Martins he has worked on a range of self-initiated and commissioned projects, taken part in artist residencies, delivered workshops internationally and developed publishing projects in collaboration with other artists and designers. Recent projects involve a residency at The New Art Gallery Walsall where a concrete fragment was coded to respond to the stock market, a residency at PLan8t in Changsha, China which involved writing a science-fiction story based on Buckminster Fuller’s ‘Operating Manual For Spaceship Earth’ and the launch of an online archive at the REFORM Design Biennale in Denmark. Gareth is a Senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University and a Visiting Tutor at the Royal College of Art where he is also working towards a PhD in Critical and Historical Studies. g-p-b.net
