Extracts from journals and drawings from the artists during their trip to California in the late 70’s.
“In Oct. 1979 the Los Angeles Louvre Gallery held a show of British Painting. Having had rather a difficult year, I thought it would be nice to go to see it. Howard Hodgkin also decided he would go. We travelled together and stayed with David Hockney.
It was such a memorable trip that we talked of perhaps working on an exhibition about it together. We plan to paint a show of four pictures each, which we will hang alternately round the gallery. It will probably take place at the Waddington Gallery in 1982 concurrently with a retrospective I shall be having at the Tate. These drawings and an excerpt from a diary which H. kept during the trip form a kind of trailer to the exhibition.”
