Sir Peter Blake and Howard Hodgkin

Extracts from journals and drawings from the artists during their trip to California in the late 70’s.

In Oct. 1979 the Los Angeles Louvre Gallery held a show of British Painting. Having had rather a difficult year, I thought it would be nice to go to see it. Howard Hodgkin also decided he would go. We travelled together and stayed with David Hockney.

It was such a memorable trip that we talked of perhaps working on an exhibition about it together. We plan to paint a show of four pictures each, which we will hang alternately round the gallery. It will probably take place at the Waddington Gallery in 1982 concurrently with a retrospective I shall be having at the Tate. These drawings and an excerpt from a diary which H. kept during the trip form a kind of trailer to the exhibition.”
